Baku, Azerbaijan, May 17

Azerbaijan’s Azerxalca OJSC has showcased a carpet woven during the period of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

In a message May 17, Azerxalca said the fleecy carpet, woven in 1926 in the country’s Shusha city, is a unique sample of Azerbaijani carpet weaving.

A flag was woven on the carpet for the first time in the history of Azerbaijani culture. The carpet weavers depicted the first flag of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, used from June 21 to November 9, 1918.

The inscriptions and images were woven from left to right according to the rules of Arabic calligraphy. The carpet (178 x129 cm) was woven from wool.

"To weave such a carpet reflecting the attribute of independent statehood in 1926 required great courage,” the message said. “The carpet woven during this period shows that no power could suppress the desire of the Azerbaijani people to live independently. The carpet was woven to reflect the idea of independence, because the carpet is our national wealth. This fact once again proves why Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pays so much attention to the development of carpet weaving, using all means to protect and save the independence of Azerbaijan."

The unique carpet, which is in a personal collection in Azerbaijan, was purchased from a Dutch collector in 2013 and brought to the country.

President Ilham Aliyev declared 2018 as the Year of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
